AUGUST 17, 2015—WICHITA, KS—He is to amateur tennis what Vince Lombardi was to pro football, Dean Smith to college basketball, and Butch Harmon to pro golf.
And he’s coming to Wichita.
In the Midwest, there may not be a more recognized name when it comes to elevating the stature of a tennis community than Mike Woody. Serving as executive director at Greater Midland Tennis Center in Midland, Michigan for the past 22 years, Woody played an integral role in that facility being named “Best Tennis Town” in the U.S. in 2009 by the USTA. Among his pages of other accolades include his years of leading the Dow Corning Tennis Classic and helping six high school championship teams practice under his tutelage.
Earlier this month, Genesis Health Clubs President Rodney Steven announced that Woody will be moving to Wichita, where he will serve as Director of Tennis, overseeing a staff of 25 tennis professionals working at seven Genesis Health Clubs throughout Kansas.
As director of tennis, Woody’s responsibilities will include expanding tennis opportunities, creating one of the most dynamic tennis programs in the nation, and leading / driving tennis success throughout the Genesis Organization.
“We are privileged to have a professional of Mike’s caliber to lead our operations here at Genesis Health Clubs,” said Steven. “He will be an excellent teacher and mentor to our members and associates and will enhance the club’s reputation as the premier place for tennis in Kansas and Missouri.
At Greater Midland, Mike was responsible for overseeing a staff of 40 tennis instructors and managing a 39-court tennis complex of both indoor and outdoor courts. His oversight included directing the longest standing USTA pro circuit women’s event, 20 national, sectional, collegiate, and local events and he was an expert in the development of tennis and grass roots programming.
Certified with the U.S. Professional Tennis Association (USPTA) and Professional Tennis Registry (PTR), Woody was awarded the USPTA Midwest Pro of the Year and PTR State Pro of the Year in 2011. A year later, he was inducted into the Midwest USPTA Hall of Fame in 2012.
