Genesis Health Clubs has acquired a second location in Lawrence with the purchase of the previous Lawrence Athletic Club building at 3201 Mesa Way. Their first day of operations will be Friday, December 7th at 11:00am.
“The previous members of LAC won’t recognize this facility when we are done with it. The club will be completely re-designed and re-equipped in this $4 million dollar project,” said Rodney Steven II, owner of Genesis Health Clubs. “Construction will begin soon and will be completed in phases, so that we can still keep the club open for workouts throughout the process.”
The new facility will include several amenities as well as three group fitness studios. A cycling studio, a mind/body yoga and Pilates studio and a large multi-purpose studio are all in the plans for the remodel. Group fitness classes are an essential element in all of Genesis Health Clubs. Classes are taught by highly certified instructors and provide members with a great way to train with a professional while socializing with friends in a group setting. The men’s and women’s locker rooms will be completely demolished and relocated to include steam rooms and like other Genesis Health Club facilities, will be the most luxurious area in the club. Members will enjoy towel and locker service as well as provided toiletries (lotions, soaps, shampoo & conditioner, deodorant, hair spray, etc…). The current tanning area in the club will be upgraded also.
Genesis members from the current Iowa Street location will be welcome to use both clubs. They will be honoring all existing memberships to LAC, as they will be acquiring all active members in their purchase.

It’s been a long transition for Genesis since first opening in Lawrence a little over a year ago. Upon opening, Steven had intended on starting construction right away. After a year of negotiations, Genesis has not been able to purchase the Iowa Street facility. They own all of their other eleven facilities and buildings, so construction plans have been delayed until they can buy the property and begin making improvements and upgrades.
“I’m excited to finally bring the city of Lawrence a first class health club with first class operations. We haven’t been able to really bring our brand to Lawrence, and we’re eager to do that in a state-of-the art facility that we own.” said Steven.
