Optimal Alignment

Are you new to yoga? We’ve got a perfect class for you! Explore the postures of yoga by taking time to breathe within each during the Optimal Alignment Yoga class. Class will be focused on proper form and alignment in each posture. Postures will be held for 5-20 breaths. It is geared toward participants who are brand new to, newer to or getting back into yoga.

Global Employee Health and Fitness Month

Are you a sitter or a stander? Did you know that doing either for more than 4 consecutive hours is not good for your body? 

SITTER: If you are sitting for more than 4 hours a day- this is a sedentary lifestyle behavior. This applies even if you go to the gym regularly after work!

Possible Ailments: Neck stiffness, heart disease, obesity, lower back pain, restless legs.

What can you do? Take periodic walks throughout the day to get water, during lunch breaks, or walk to a coworker's desk instead of sending an email. Get a convertible desk so you can stand throughout your workday, use fitness trackers or apps to keep track of your fitness levels. Also keep in mind how important posture is and having your station adjusted to fit YOU.

 

STANDER: If you are standing for more than 4 hours a day- risks start to set in. "Too much" standing is also based on your own circumstances, such as being pregnant.  

Possible Ailments: increased risk of chronic lower back pain, musculoskeletal disorders, pain/aching in legs and feet, flat feet, heel spurs and plantar fascitis, increased stroke risk, degeneration of joints and spine. 

What can you do? begin stretching throughout the day, get supportive shoes or an anti fatigue mat.  

 

Fun in the Sun!

Even though we just got snow, the sunny, warm weather is on it’s way! (Right, mother nature?!?) UV rays can damage our skin in as little as 15 minutes! To avoid damage, follow the CDC's recommendations below.

  1. Find Shade: Finding shade from a tree, umbrella, or other shelter can do wonders for protection from the sun.
  2. Protective Clothing: When practical long sleeve pants and shirts provide the best protection. There are clothing items designed to protect you from UV rays, even a t-shirt which has an SPF rating below 15 is better than nothing!
  3. Protective Accessories: Wearing a hat with a brim that goes all the way around will help protect your face, ears, and the back of your neck! Sun glasses are a great way to protect your eyes and the soft skin around them as well. 
  4. Sunscreen: last but definitely not least is sunscreen! A good rule of thumb is to have an SPF of at least 15, check the expiration date (if there isn't one they are not effective past 3 years), and reapply every 2 hours. There are quite a few cosmetics out there with SPF in them! Just remember not to use them alone if the SPF is lower than 15.
