Reopening & COVID-19 Protocols

Merle Hay will officially reopen on Friday, 5/15 at 6:00 a.m.

While we were closed, we made many key improvements to keep you safe and healthy while you exercise, including:

  • No fevers. Every staff member and guest will receive temperature screening when they arrive. Anyone with fever or other symptoms will be asked to stay home.
  • Space to breathe. Our large facilities give us the room to space you out so you can do your workout with at least six full feet of social distance. We’re strategically blocking off equipment, limiting the size of group exercise classes, and requiring that members in the weight room only use every other machine.
  • Cleaner Air. We’ve invested heavily in cutting-edge, virus-eliminating technology, and have added advanced oxidation air purification systems to the busiest areas of every club. This reduces your risk by killing viruses and bacteria in the air and on surfaces all day long. Natural ionized advanced oxidizers are released directly into the air to purify oxygen and surfaces, so you can breathe easy. Learn more here.
  • Comprehensive Sanitization. We’ve added a Sanitization Specialist to each club, who disinfects and sanitizes throughout the day. We are also asking all personal trainers and members to sanitize before and after each equipment use. We’ve added more hand sanitizer, spray bottles, and other products to make sure every surface stays thoroughly sanitized.
  • Member Code of Conduct. All members will be asked to do their part by disinfecting before and after each equipment use, maintaining safe social distance, staying home when sick, and doing everything they can to protect those around them. Together, we’ll help stop the spread of this virus in our communities.

Q: Are there new hours?
A: During phase I of reopening, the club will operate from 6a-8p M-F, 7a-6p Sat, and 8a-6p Sun.

Q: Will tennis be open?
A: Yes! We're taking extra precautions to keep you safe, so join us on the court!

Q: Will locker rooms, pools, or saunas be open?
A: Locker rooms, pools, showers, and sauans will remain closed through the first phase of reopening due to Polk County regulations. However, restrooms within the locker rooms will still be available.

Q: Should I bring my own water?
A: Yes. Due to Polk county regulations, water fountains will be temporarily unavailable.

Q: Will basketball or racquetball courts be open?
A: They will be temporarily closed for racquetball or basketball to comply with Polk County regulations, but may be used for select group fitness classes or personal training.

Q: Will group exercise classes continue?
A: Yes! We will follow social distancing guidelines, so some classes may have a smaller capacity than usual. We have added a new reservation system through our online member portal.

Q: Do I have to reserve a spot to attend class?
A: You do not have to reserve a spot, space permitting. However, those who reserve a spot will be guaranteed entry into the class. Walk-in slots will be first-come, first-served.

Q: Do I need to wear a mask?
A: Always comply with state, local, and federal guidelines and regulations. If none are applicable, members may choose to wear a mask if they would prefer.

Q: Will Kid's Club be open?
A: Kid's Club will remain closed during phase I, though we expect it to reopen as regulations permit and things return to normal.

Q: Will the building capacity change?
A: During Phase 1, we will be operating at 50% capacity with a limit of 10 people in group exercise classes, and six feet of social distancing is required at all times. We have developed systems to manage these restrictions in our other clubs that have already opened and don’t anticipate major issues. However, we do recommend that you reserve class times through our online portal and attend during off hours if possible. Our club tends to be busiest early in the morning before 8:00 a.m. and between 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.
