Tennis Tip

The Non-Hitter: the biggest role on the court

The non-hitter (for example the returner's partner) has the biggest role on court. They have to be ready to defend the middle against their net players volleys or overheads if the return doesn't go cross court or deep and yet has to be ready to transition to dominate the net if it does go cross-court or deep. The same is true for the server's partner. When the serve is struck the server's partner has to be ready to cover the line and pick off shots floating in the middle. If the return goes over their head or cross court away the serve partner then has to be ready to defend the middle as the return team takes over the net. The non-hitter has to be ready to see the court quickly, be dynamic and ready to move, and process many variables. The rule of thumb is that non-hitter has to cover the most court since the hitter is hitting and/or recovering from hitting.
