Do people really need to take dietary supplements?

National surveys indicate that about half of Americans use dietary supplements. Industry sources suggest that as many as 70% of Americans may use supplements occasionally but estimate that only about 40% of the population uses supplements with any regularity. In any case, millions of Americans have opted to use dietary supplements to improve nutrition, to make up for nutrients missing in the food supply, as well as to decrease susceptibility to or severity of disease, or to increase energy or improve performance.

The Journal of the American Medical Association published a clinical application study entitled "Vitamins for Chronic Disease Prevention in Adults" on June 19, 2002. This article states, "...suboptimal intake of some vitamins, above levels causing classic vitamin deficiency, is a risk factor for chronic diseases and common in the general population...Most people do not consume an optimal amount of all vitamins by diet alone...it appears prudent for all adults to take vitamin supplements."
