Feature Instructor of the Month: Javier Gonzalez

Javier Gonzalez is the oldest of 7 born to a mixed Mexican- American Family in the small town of Arcadia, Florida.  Although blessed to be born an American citizen, he has spent a lot of his life in his family’s little ranch housed in the mountains of Guanajuato, Mexico learning the true meaning of hard work and appreciation for what the United States has to offer, since there was little beyond the essentials available in this home in Mexico. But time in Mexico was in no way a burden, rather a lesson and a blessing in disguise since he was able to be with his family and build pride for the culture he came from.

Javier also took great lessons from his mother, who single-handedly raised her children while maintaining a full time job and working to accomplish her dreams. Early on, his mother made sure that he accomplished each and every one of his goals even at a young age, enrolling him and his siblings in many programs that would lead them to succeed and him to earn a scholarship in the 6th grade that would fund his entire college career. First starting at a community college, he transferred to the University of South Florida Tampa campus quickly earning his Associates degree, later two Bachelor’s degrees and then finally his Master’s degree.

Currently the Director of Fraternity & Sorority Life at Emporia State University, Javier's main responsibility focuses on high student interaction, student leadership programming, student development and progress, advising students in a general spectrum of circumstances, and multicultural coordination. During his time at USF and now at ESU, he has managed to gain a substantial amount of experience within each and every one of these aspects but more within multicultural involvement/coordination and student programming.

At Genesis, Javier is one of the newest members of the staff as an instructor for the Zumba class where he manages to be motivating and empowering to those around him to further aid his strongest belief that those who at least try to do something out of their norm are the ones that go far and beyond the average individual. He hopes to one day be able to influence more individuals to get up and get going to become the best versions of themselves as the strives to do the same for himself.  For this reason, he continues to dedicate his best in all he does and to push each and every individual to their greatest potential.

In her spare time, Kara loves to go watch movies, listen to music, go see musicals, shop at the West Bottoms in KC, and last but not least, she loves to travel!

Introducing a New INSTRUCTOR : Michael Christian

Hey everyone, my name is Michael Christiani.  I'm originally from Emporia, and was a track and cross country runner at the state level as well as receiving multiple scholarship offers.  Instead of pursuing them, I chose to serve in the Army Infantry for 8 years.  Upon completion of my contract, I moved back in order to rekindle with my family and friends I had seen very little of for so long.  I have another main job I work during the week, but I am here every Friday at 12:15 for ATC and 4:30 for HIIT!

During my time in the Army, I had many different jobs and responsibilities, but my main specialty always seemed to go back to fitness.  I was stationed in Ft Myer, VA as an Honor Guard, which is also where I had my first deployment to Africa for 15 months.  While in Africa, I was a Commando Course instructor for the Ugandan military, there were 15 Americans training 240 Ugandans.  It was during this time I found my love for teaching.  My second duty station was Schofield, HI where I was a squad leader, and had my last deployment for a year to Afghanistan.  For my last year in Hawaii, I worked directly for our high level leadership, and was tasked with creating a mandatory daily fitness program for approximately 200 soldiers that had specific injuries.  I had to create a program that would give them a good workout while not affecting their injuries, plus I was the head enlisted instructor.  When I separated from the military, we only had approximately 60 people attending the program, so it was quite a success, and I would say my best fitness achievement to date.
I love instructing, I love helping people out so they can achieve their goals and live a healtheir lifestyle, and I would love to see you all at my classes!  Picture above (Final in blues)

New Instructor in December, Kayla Ayer

"My name is Kayla Ayer.  I was born and raised in Emporia, Ks. I   attended Emporia High School where I graduated with honors and have a state champion title in powerlifting. I am now attending Emporia State University where I am pursing a degree in physical and health education.  I am 19 years old and have a younger brother Kyle and a younger sister, Katie.  I enjoy spending time with friends and family as well as lifting in my free time.  Joining the Genesis team has changed my life and I enjoy every minute of being in the club. I heard about Genesis through some friends and now it is like a second home to me.  Being in the club puts me in a positive mood and I always leave with a smile on my face and satisfaction of hard work.  I bring to Genesis the knowledge of power and Olympic  lifting as well as how to train for different sports.  I am excited to learn new ways of training and working with different people through teaching classes and personal training.   I will be teaching Core and HIIT here at Genesis ."

Instructor of the month:  Silvana Rueda

My name is Silvana Rueda I was born in Durago, Mexico.  My husband and I moved to Emporia in 1990. We have two grown sons and two beautiful grandsons.

My Lifestyle was very boring and different until I started coming to Walburns and then I hired on with Genesis Health club.  I enjoy teaching here so much I can’t even express my feelings.  I teach Buttz and Gutz and Step and tone and have become more confident and comfortable about myself.  I enjoy the fact that people like my class.  When I am not sweating it out in the gym I enjoy cooking and spending time with my family my favorite hobby is shopping for clothes, shoes and many other thing.

Group Fitness class of the month is Group Ride/G-Cycle

These classes are offered several times throughout the week.  We have 3 dynamic instructors: Charlotte Pinick, Tia Grundleger,  and Kara Thomas.

Dirty Kanza training is here!! It consists of cycling and strength training (2 personal training sessions a week), and stretching. This program is designed for riders not accustomed to training for endurance activities.  The program calendar gives you a day-by-day schedule of how long to ride which our ride and cycle classes are a natural fit. The strength training program (2 personal training group sessions a week) will help strengthen your legs, back, and core so that they can endure all the miles on the bike.  The stretching will help the body recover faster and also help prevent injury.

The program is a two month program, starting in January.  By the end of two months you will continue to train with some modifications based upon your fitness level and the distance you want to ride.
Anyone signing up for this program, member or non-member, is guaranteed a spot in the DK 100 or DK 200.

Please see Basil, Charlotte or Tia for information and pricing.

Greetings Emporia Members!  Below is our November Group Fitness news.
Please make sure to follow our facebook page for ongoing updates too!

16 in 60 Congratulations

Congratulations to Kelsey Carr and Ryan LaSota for completing 16 group fitness classes in 60 days!  They will receive a Genesis T-Shirt, 50 G-Perks and one free “Shake This Burner” shake.  Best of all you are on your way to meeting your fitness goals!  Studies show that people are more apt to continue a fitness program if they exercise with another person or in a group.  It also takes about 60 days to “develop a habit.”  With our 16 in 60 Program, you get both!

Instructor of the Month

My name is Tia Grundleger and I joined Genesis Health Clubs as a member in 2010. My husband Adam and I were looking for somewhere that we could be motivated in our fitness journeys. Our youngest child had just turned 2 and I was still using her birth as an excuse for carrying around 70lbs of extra weight. I now have 3 children Jasmine 9, Lila 6, Iris 5 and I home school them in my spare time.

My first group fitness class scared me, challenged me and hooked me. The encouragement I felt from the instructor, the members and the staff made me feels like I was not alone on my journey to a healthier life.

It was a full year before I worked up the courage to take a spin class. I would peak in during those classes and came to the conclusion that these people, both instructor and students, were crazy!  After my first G-cycle class I was addicted!  I loved the energy, the sweat and the way I felt after, I loved everything about it (with the exception of "saddle pains" of course). The instructors pushed me, inspired me and helped me see that I could go even further.

Since then I have certified in Group Ride/R30 and Group Centergy, two classes that push and challenge me every time I teach them.

My journey is far from over but I intend to keep going.  I hope to one day have the privilege to encourage, inspire and walk or ride alongside someone else on their journey to a healthier happier lifestyle just like my instructors did for me.

I invite you to come to Group Centergy this month and try it out.  We will have a little something for you for attending if you have never done it before.

Genesis Success Story - Emporia Member, Charlotte C.

Thursday, July 24 2014 3:11 PM
Categorized In Emporia

"I have always done some form of exercise all my adult life but never a gym until my husband, Larry, gave me a club membership and personal training as a gift and who could turn that down!  Shortly after I started I took a variety of fitness classes and began training with Basil.  Over the past 15 months he has had me focus on balance, stability and core exercises.  He said he wanted to work from the inside out.  We spent 3 months getting me prepared for a total knee replacement which paid off and was a total success.  When I was able to return to regular, weekly workouts I couldn’t wait to start training again and incorporated Group Power, Spin and Zumba as often as possible."

"Five months ago Basil had me begin a specific strength-building program.  Something I never believed I would have been doing but I now understand the importance of weight training.  I am now 10 month post-surgery, at a weight I am comfortable with and was stunned when I safely squatted 1.4 times my weight, 205.  Basil is very particular about correct form as well as how to use the machines correctly and knowledgeable when it comes to fitness.  I feel fortunate to have a trainer who has helped me achieve the level of fitness I have wanted.  He is someone I trust without hesitation and I wouldn’t be where I am today without his training."
