AUGUST 17, 2015—WICHITA, KS—He is to amateur tennis what Vince Lombardi was to pro football, Dean Smith to college basketball, and Butch Harmon to pro golf.
And he’s coming to Wichita.
In the Midwest, there may not be a more recognized name when it comes to elevating the stature of a tennis community than Mike Woody. Serving as executive director at Greater Midland Tennis Center in Midland, Michigan for the past 22 years, Woody played an integral role in that facility being named “Best Tennis Town” in the U.S. in 2009 by the USTA. Among his pages of other accolades include his years of leading the Dow Corning Tennis Classic and helping six high school championship teams practice under his tutelage.
Earlier this month, Genesis Health Clubs President Rodney Steven announced that Woody will be moving to Wichita, where he will serve as Director of Tennis, overseeing a staff of 25 tennis professionals working at seven Genesis Health Clubs throughout Kansas.
As director of tennis, Woody’s responsibilities will include expanding tennis opportunities, creating one of the most dynamic tennis programs in the nation, and leading / driving tennis success throughout the Genesis Organization.
“We are privileged to have a professional of Mike’s caliber to lead our operations here at Genesis Health Clubs,” said Steven. “He will be an excellent teacher and mentor to our members and associates and will enhance the club’s reputation as the premier place for tennis in Kansas and Missouri.
At Greater Midland, Mike was responsible for overseeing a staff of 40 tennis instructors and managing a 39-court tennis complex of both indoor and outdoor courts. His oversight included directing the longest standing USTA pro circuit women’s event, 20 national, sectional, collegiate, and local events and he was an expert in the development of tennis and grass roots programming.
Certified with the U.S. Professional Tennis Association (USPTA) and Professional Tennis Registry (PTR), Woody was awarded the USPTA Midwest Pro of the Year and PTR State Pro of the Year in 2011. A year later, he was inducted into the Midwest USPTA Hall of Fame in 2012.

(OVERLAND PARK, KS) – Genesis Health Clubs has purchased Midtown Athletic Club in Overland Park, KS. Currently Genesis owns/operates clubs in Wichita, Hutchinson, Salina, Emporia, Lawrence, Leavenworth, McPherson, Topeka and Manhattan, Kansas and clubs in St. Joseph and Springfield, Missouri. They have an extensive background in tennis, as six of their locations also house large tennis facilities. With 29 years of experience and great expertise in the health and fitness industry, they are looking forward to bringing their passion for health and fitness and excellence in customer service to Overland Park.
As of today at 4:00pm, Midtown Athletic Club members are now Genesis Health Club members and will have access to all Genesis locations across Kansas and Missouri. Membership benefits, the tennis programming, group fitness schedule and rates will not be changing, but the look and feel of the club will be.
“The whole club will undergo a major remodel as drawings are progressing now. The remodel will include an expanded entrance, new locker rooms, updated pool area, expanded fitness area and also upgrades to the tennis viewing area,” said Rodney Steven II, president and owner of Genesis Health Clubs.
Genesis Health Clubs has grown from thirteen locations to twenty one in just under a year. Every city in the state of Kansas with a population of over 30,000 now houses a Genesis Health Club.
“We have had a year of tremendous growth in our company this year,” said Steven, “Several of these markets we have wanted to move into for years, and acquisition opportunities all just fell into place over these last twelve months. I’ve always wanted to have presence in the Kansas City area and the Midtown club is the perfect fit for us. The facility houses nine tennis courts, an indoor lap pool, a beautiful fitness floor and two group fitness studios.”
The deal with Midtown Athletic Club in Overland Park marks not only the final large Kansas region to house a Genesis, but also the venture into a much larger market for the company. When asked what is next for Genesis, Steven replied, “With the amount of growth that we have done this past year, I don’t foresee any more new clubs in 2015. But if the opportunity presents itself, I definitely think that we are capable of even more growth. I have a great team right now and I’d love to grow Genesis into some new markets outside of Kansas. Now that we are in every major city in the state and twenty-one clubs strong…. We have new goals to set as a company and the sky’s the limit!”
Wichita, Kansas; February 15, 2015 – Genesis Foundation for Fitness and Tennis (GFFT) Board of Directors concluded a thorough search process by selecting Lacey Mills as GFFT’s new Executive Director.
"I'm looking forward to working with Lacey, as she brings such a wealth of knowledge and passion for charitable giving to the foundation. GFFT is lucky
to have her as we begin our ninth year," said Rodney Steven II, GFFT founder.
An experienced leader in the non-profit sector with an outstanding track record of delivering results, Mrs. Mills recently spent the last three years with the Muscular Dystrophy Association, growing their fundraising efforts in Central and Western Kansas. At MDA, she gained valuable experience working with local sponsors on multiple fundraising campaigns, new business development as well as managed an array of services provided to local families by the organization. Lacey demonstrated a remarkable ability to effectively build relationships with families and local sponsors to grow fundraising efforts, experience the GFFT Board deems critical for the future of their non-profit organization.
GFFT provides funds to financially disadvantaged and at-risk youth, regardless of background and means, allowing them to have the opportunity to participate in recreational and/or competition fitness activities. The Foundation will provide this funding to at-risk, disadvantages and otherwise under-funded youth. GFFT is designed to support and encourage physical activity among young people by providing funding to applicants based on the basis of need, commitment and public benefit. GFFT believes physical activity improves quality of life, and when begun at an early age, physical activity offers healthy habits that may result in lifelong health and well-being. http://genesisfoundationwichita.com/

A cycling studio, a mind/body yoga and Pilates studio and a large multi-purpose studio are all in the plans for the remodel. Group fitness classes are an essential element in all of Genesis Health Clubs. Classes are taught by highly certified instructors and provide members with a great way to train with a professional while socializing with friends in a group setting. The men’s and women’s locker rooms will be completely demolished and relocated to include steam rooms and like other Genesis Health Club facilities, will be the most luxurious area in the club. Members will enjoy towel and locker service as well as provided toiletries (lotions, soaps, shampoo & conditioner, deodorant, hair spray, etc…). The current tanning area in the club will be upgraded also.
Genesis members from the current Iowa Street location will be welcome to use both clubs. They will be honoring all existing memberships to LAC, as they will be acquiring all active members in their purchase.
It’s been a long transition for Genesis since first opening in Lawrence a little over a year ago. Upon opening, Steven had intended on starting construction right away. After a year of negotiations, Genesis has not been able to purchase the Iowa Street facility. They own all of their other eleven facilities and buildings, so construction plans have been delayed until they can buy the property and begin making improvements and upgrades.
“I’m excited to finally bring the city of Lawrence a first class health club with first class operations. We haven’t been able to really bring our brand to Lawrence, and we’re eager to do that in a state-of-the art facility that we own.” said Steven.
(LEAVENWORTH, KS) – Genesis Health Clubs announced today that they have purchased the property at 2924 S. 4th Street Trafficway, (the former "Food 4 Less" grocery store) and will be targeting to move by the end of the year. Currently Genesis occupies a large space in the Leavenworth Shopping Mall at 3400 S. 4th Street.
The new location allows for more space and many added amenities including a lap pool, basketball court with walking track and an MMA studio that will host the already popular mixed martial arts and American Jujitsu programs Genesis offers. The facility also will have three group fitness studios; a large aerobics floor, a mind/body studio for yoga and Pilates and a cycling studio, a whirlpool, spacious locker rooms that include steam rooms, and large cardio and weight rooms with several pieces of new additional cutting edge equipment. Genesis is known for our Personal Training and the ‘Results Based Training Program’ that will be ever so prevalent in the new facility.
Genesis Owner, Rodney Steven II, stated, “Since opening up our location in Leavenworth I don’t feel we have had the opportunity to serve our members in the way we are known for. We are sorry it took us so long, but we were unable to get the current landlord at the Leavenworth Mall to work with us on a new lease or purchase of the building on acceptable terms. We didn’t want to remodel the existing space until we owned the building or had a long-term lease in place.”
“We own and operate all of our other buildings and this purchase will allow us to bring Leavenworth a large state-of-the-art facility with the same great service and programs as we have in our other Genesis locations. The new location will host so many more amenities including full locker and towel service, free toiletries (shampoo, conditioner and body wash), hair dryers in the locker rooms, and the finishing’s will be very contemporary. We will also have the space to offer more group fitness classes and programs that have been very popular in the club, and we’ll be able to accommodate more members in every class. I’m excited to start construction and share with our members what we have in store for them!” said Steven.
The new Genesis Health Club also plans on housing three or four businesses in its facility including a tanning business with conventional tanning beds and spray tans; a supplement store with nutrition/supplements; a physical therapy office; and possibly a hair salon. Each business will have entrances from the health club for member convenience, as well as exterior entrances for the general public.

WICHITA - 7/14/09 - Group Centergy is a mind-body program at GENESIS HEALTH CLUBS in Wichita and Hutchinson that offers participants a chance to improve strength and flexibility while rejuvenating the body's systems. Its movements focus the body's energy to relieve stress, reduce pain and improve postural alignment.
"A person can achieve clearer mental vision and peace of mind by detachment from stressful thoughts and emotions. This detachment is achieved by learning to direct one's focus. Group Centergy is the perfect program to accomplish this, while working the muscles to maintain flexibility and improve circulation," states Angie Kendall, Group Fitness Coordinator of Genesis Health Clubs.
Set to uplifting music, Group Centergy is a natural stress reliever and an excellent form of preventative medicine. After just one experience of centering and enjoying the movements, Group Centergy participants will notice straighter posture, an increase in strength and flexibility and a greater sense of peace.
Group Centergy is truly for everyone, removing barriers of age, gender and fitness background. The nature of the program makes it easy for everyone to achieve success, master techniques over time and return for more. (WICHITA, KS) – Friendship and fun are two factors that make group fitness a popular offering at Genesis Health Clubs. Starting June 16th, Genesis will launch a new group fitness program designed to increase the fun factor for participants and keep boredom at bay.
Genesis President Rodney Steven II announced today that the Club will kick off Group Powertm, the first of a multi-program offering, on Saturday, June 16th at each location:
Members are signing up now to attend the inaugural classes at each location and be the first to try out the new regimen, says Angie Kendall, Genesis group fitness director. “Group fitness attendance is usually spontaneous, but we expect an overwhelming response the first day, that’s why we’re enrolling people,” she says. Genesis employees will be invited to attend classes the week of June 10th.
First to launch is Group Powertm, a 60-minute barbell program designed to strengthen major muscles. Branded as “Your Hour of Power,” Group Powertm incorporates barbells into a series of simple, athletic moves such as squats, lunges, presses and curls, with music that motivates movement. Group Powertm is the first of a variety of new group fitness programs to roll out in the coming months, including:
Each class will be updated quarterly with new choreography and music, to keep participants challenged and avoid fitness plateaus, says Kendall. Pre-choreographed classes, specialized instructor training and quarterly program updates are what distinguish the Group Powertm and its related regimen from the competition.
Versatility is also a key of the new Group Powertm and other programs to come. “Because group fitness appeals to all ages, it’s important that people be able to work at their own pace,” says Kendall. “Participants get their own set of barbells which they can add or subtract plates from, depending on their goals and abilities.” Participants at the June 16th launch will be the first to work with new barbells. Group Powertm is designed to improve lean muscle and elevate metabolic rate, to help burn fat more efficiently.
Group Powertm is part of a scientifically designed group fitness regimen designed by Body Training Systems (BTS), a division of The STEP Company, maker of The STEP, designed and patented in 1989 and currently used in more than 25,000 clubs worldwide. For more information visit www.bodytrainingsystems.com.
Group Powertm is choreographed by Cathy Spencer-Browning, BTS National Training and Program Director. Cathy holds a degree in Human Movement from Wollongong University, Australia and is an international presenter and lecturer. In 2001 Cathy was named Australia’s Fitness Professional of the Year and has served on the American Council on Exercise Faculty Advisory Board.
