From One Club To A Family Of Thousands
What started more than 30 years ago as a single health club in Wichita, Kansas has grown into the largest privately owned health club organizations in the country. As Genesis continues to expand, our mission remains the same: create welcoming spaces where people feel supported, valued, and inspired to live healthier lives.
Through continued growth, reinvestment, and a commitment to the member experience, Genesis has evolved beyond traditional fitness clubs to offer comprehensive fitness, recovery, community, and wellness experiences designed for the way people live today.
But growth has never been just about adding locations. Every club represents an investment in healthier communities, meaningful connections, local jobs, and experiences that help people move, feel, and live better.
History of Genesis Health Clubs
After acquiring Wichita’s West 13th location, which opened in 1986, Rodney embarked on a transformation journey. Starting with small renovations, including personally painting the walls and laying new flooring, he built strong relationships with members, fostering the club’s growth. Daily improvements followed, leading to equipment upgrades.
In December 2003, tragedy struck when a fire engulfed the entire club. Undeterred, plans were swiftly made to rebuild bigger and better. During construction, a temporary location served loyal members. In 2006, West 13th rose from the ashes and is now a three-story landmark in West Wichita. As the inaugural Genesis Health Club, it is the foundation of our members’ fitness journey.
In December 1996, Genesis Health Clubs transformed a former racquetball and fitness facility in Wichita, Kansas, into what would become the East Central club. A quick facelift over Christmas helped retain existing members and marked the beginning of the club’s continued growth and evolution. Over the years, remodels and expansions added features like a cardio mezzanine, a new nursery, and upgraded locker rooms.
East Central became the corporate hub for all Genesis Health Clubs operations, symbolizing the company’s growth and long-term commitment to Wichita and the surrounding Kansas communities. Since its inception, the club has continued to adapt and thrive while offering a comprehensive fitness experience.
In 1999, Genesis Health Clubs continued its growth in Wichita, Kansas, with the acquisition of Via Christi’s fitness center on the west side of the city. Immediate renovations, including an expanded cardio area and a new weight room, marked the beginning of the club’s transformation. Over time, the Wichita facility evolved with the addition of a second floor and expanded tennis offerings, becoming a popular hub for senior members and the surrounding community.
West Central’s story reflects Genesis Health Clubs’ continued expansion, adaptation, and long-term commitment to members throughout Wichita, Kansas. The original relationship with Via Christi also helped pave the way for future collaborations and continued growth across the Wichita market.
In early 2001, Genesis Health Clubs expanded in Wichita, Kansas, with the acquisition of the Wichita Racquet Club. Rock Road quickly transformed into one of Wichita’s premier health clubs, featuring an expanded fitness floor, outdoor pool, and upgraded tennis facilities. Continued renovations and new amenities helped keep the club at the forefront of fitness in Wichita.
Tennis remained a major focus as Rock Road evolved into Genesis Health Clubs’ flagship Wichita location, adding restaurants, salons, retail, and wellness services along the way.
Genesis Health Clubs expanded beyond Wichita with the opening of a new club in Hutchinson, Kansas. After first operating from a temporary facility, Genesis developed a full-service health club featuring group fitness studios, cycling, and an expansive strength training area.
As the Hutchinson community grew, the club continued evolving with additional fitness spaces and updated amenities to meet changing wellness trends, becoming a leading fitness destination in central Kansas.
Following the success of its Hutchinson expansion, Genesis Health Clubs continued growing across Kansas with the acquisition of a shopping center in Salina, Kansas. A $7 million remodel transformed the 95,000-square-foot property into a premier fitness and tennis destination featuring five indoor tennis courts and the Grand Slam viewing area, designed to help grow the sport within the Salina community.
With a top-notch personal training team, popular group fitness programs, and year-round tennis, the Salina club became a major wellness hub for central Kansas.
In February 2010, Genesis Health Clubs expanded into Emporia, Kansas, with the acquisition of Walburn’s Fitness & Wellness. A major remodel and expansion introduced a cycling studio, upgraded strength equipment, and enhanced locker rooms, helping modernize the club while continuing its strong community roots.
Built on the Walburn family’s mission of creating a healthier Emporia community, the club reflects Genesis Health Clubs’ continued commitment to wellness, growth, and small-town Kansas communities.
As Genesis Health Clubs continued expanding across Kansas, the Wichita Ice Center became the company’s fifth location in the Wichita market. Recognizing a growing need for youth skating and recreational programs in Wichita, Genesis remodeled the facility to include a health club, versatile fitness spaces, and Pucks Sports Bar, transforming the Ice Center into a unique community destination.
The Wichita Ice Center reflected Genesis Health Clubs’ diverse approach to wellness and community engagement, combining fitness, recreation, and family activities under one roof. After more than a decade of operating the facility, Genesis and the City of Wichita concluded their partnership, and the location closed in January 2022.
In 2011, Genesis acquired two of the five Maximus Fitness locations in Lawrence and Leavenworth, Kansas, with the remaining three to be added to the portfolio a few years later. Both were relocated to new areas due to extensive remodeling needs and spacing issues, and they became the best state-of-the-art facilities in the area. Leavenworth was moved into a former grocery store down the street from its original location. Lawrence South moved into the former KU Jayhawk Tennis Center after Genesis acquired it in 2015. Lawrence celebrated its grand opening in June 2016.
In November 2012, Genesis acquired the McPherson Athletic Club in McPherson, Kansas, from the Walburn family. Following the acquisition, Genesis launched a $2 million construction project at a new site just down the street from the original location. As the company’s smallest market at the time, McPherson reflected Genesis’ commitment to bringing premium fitness, wellness, and community-focused experiences to smaller Kansas communities beyond major metropolitan areas.
In December 2012, Genesis acquired the Lawrence Athletic Club in Lawrence, Kansas, expanding its presence in the community with a second local location now known as Genesis Lawrence North. Lawrence North reflected Genesis’ continued investment in creating community-focused wellness experiences tailored to the evolving needs of Lawrence members.

In May 2014, Genesis acquired two Ozark Fitness Centers in Springfield, Missouri. Before the acquisition, the clubs had operated for over 30 years. Dan Martin, a friend of Genesis owner Rodney Steven II, previously owned them. Both clubs included tanning franchise businesses within the facilities called “The Tan Company.” Remodels and updates revitalized the facilities, adding an indoor swimming pool, expanding cardio and stretching spaces, and fully renovated locker rooms.
In the summer of 2014, Genesis acquired the three remaining Maximus Fitness locations in Topeka, Kansas, initiating extensive remodels and renovations at the North and Southwest locations. The third location, Topeka Southeast, closed its doors after Topeka Southwest’s remodel was completed in 2018. The commitment to marrying fitness and tennis at the Wood Valley location while preserving the rich tennis history exemplifies Genesis’s dedication to innovation and preservation, which serves the community proudly to this day.
In February 2015, Genesis expanded into Manhattan, Kansas by acquiring MAX Fitness clubs. A couple of years later, in December 2017, construction began on a brand-new 65,000 sq. ft. health club designed to replace the former locations. Today, the club sits atop one of Manhattan’s most prominent hills, becoming the fourth Genesis location built from the ground up. Following its highly anticipated grand opening in March 2021, the club introduced extensive tennis programming and luxury amenities to the Manhattan community.
Genesis expanded into the Kansas City market in March 2015, a month after the Manhattan acquisition, by purchasing Midtown Athletic Club in Overland Park, Kansas, which is recognized as a leader in tennis programming throughout Kansas City. To preserve and improve its rich tennis history, the facility underwent an $11 million renovation with a grand reopening in January 2020. It added 25,000 square feet of luxury fitness and tennis programming, making it the largest and most prestigious health club in the Kansas City area.
In the spring and summer of 2016, Genesis made its largest acquisition of 23 total Gold’s Gym and 24-Hour Fitness locations in various towns within the Kansas City metro area, Omaha, Nebraska, and Tulsa, Oklahoma. Three locations in Kansas City were promptly closed after the purchase due to their proximity to nearby Genesis clubs and to facilitate Genesis’ future building investments. Genesis’s expanded presence in the Midwest marked a significant milestone, consolidating its position as a leading fitness provider in the Midwest.
In December 2016, Genesis expanded into Omaha, Nebraska by acquiring the 108,000 sq. ft. Nebraska Elite Sports and Fitness facility. Following its grand reopening in March 2021, the club introduced upgraded amenities and a luxurious, welcoming fitness environment for the Omaha community.
In March 2017, Genesis acquired the 100,000 sq. ft. former HealthRidge Fitness Center in Olathe, Kansas. In November 2017, Genesis acquired four Miramont Lifestyle Fitness locations in Fort Collins and Loveland, Colorado. In 2019, both locations underwent major renovations and upgrades, transforming them into modern, luxurious fitness destinations for their communities.
