The Benefits of Working Out With a Partner

When it comes to hitting the gym, two can definitely be better than one. Here’s why.

Accountability

Having a blah day? Don’t feel like going to the gym after a stressful day at work? You know working out will help you feel better, but without accountability, it can be all too easy to skip out.

This all changes if you have a workout partner. After all, it’s one thing to cancel your own plans, but it’s much harder to cancel on someone who’s counting on you to be there.

Maximize accountability by making sure you and your partner set up a schedule ahead of time, rather than making indefinite plans that leave you both an easy “out.” You’ll be much more likely to follow through if it’s on both your calendars.

Motivation

For many people, having someone to cheer you on makes a huge difference in how motivated you are.

A workout buddy can not only help you power through a workout when you feel like giving up, but can support you and encourage you to achieve your long-term fitness goals.

Competition

A little healthy competition never hurt anyone, and when it comes to working out, it can be a big help.

Most of us have a competitive streak (some more than others!), and none of us like to be “the weak link.” We want to be able to keep up with a friend on the track or win that friendly game of tennis. When you feel like quitting, you’ll be more likely to keep at it if your workout partner is still going strong.

When choosing a workout partner, it’s best to pick someone at or near the same fitness level. That way, you can push each other towards goals that are challenging, yet still achievable for both of you.

The Fun Factor

Even when you’re super-motivated, there’s only so long you can spend by yourself on a cardio or weight machine before you start to burn out.

With a workout partner, you can take part in high-energy, fun competitive sports like tennis, racquetball, or one-on-one basketball. You can set up friendly challenges for one another, like a race around the track or pool.

When you’re with a workout buddy who you like spending time with, you’ll enjoy your entire workout experience more. You’ll be more likely to stick with your workout commitment and meet your fitness goals.

Variety

Variety is the spice of life. It’s also key to making your gym sessions more enjoyable and more effective.

Your workout partner will have different skills, knowledge and abilities than you do. You can both benefit by introducing each other to favorite workouts and exercises. Switch up your routine by taking turns leading new exercises each session.

Having a workout buddy can also give you the confidence to try new things, such as a group fitness class or experimenting with different exercise equipment. For example, if you’ve always wanted to try yoga but are feeling a little intimidated about going to a class on your own, a workout partner can help you feel more comfortable.

Safety

Having someone to spot you when you do squats or bench press is a gym safety must. With a workout partner, you’ll never have to approach a random person to spot you or count your reps. Your partner can also keep an eye on your form as you work out.

So what are you waiting for? Find a gym buddy  and start meeting your fitness goals, together!
